2007 Report to the Community

The Red Cross In the Roanoke Valley

Disaster Relief and Community Disaster Education
When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross is there. This year we responded to nearly 66 local disasters, mostly residential fires. We helped 238 affected individuals with emergency food, shelter, clothing, and emotional support.

Because being prepared can make your family and community safer and some
times minimize injury and destruction, we taught 20,703 attendees disaster education in the community.

Health, Safety and Community Services
This year, 14,167 individuals learned lifesaving skills through classes offered by the chapter. From first aid,
CPR and babysitter's training, to lifeguarding and Learn-to-Swim programs,
Red Cross programs help
people lead safer and healthier lives.

International Services
The Red Cross helps vulnerable people around the world to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters, complex humanitarian emergencies, and life-threatening health conditions. We train individuals in courses related to the international involvement of the American Red Cross

Armed Forces Emergency Services
The American Red Cross provides communication between those in the Armed Forces and their families. We have a worldwide network that reaches service members wherever they are to communicate a birth, death or illness. This year we provided 382 services to families with loved ones who are on military assignments around the world.

Blood Services
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Thanks to generous blood donors, the Red Cross collects and distributes nearly half the nation’s blood supply. During the last year, we helped run
636
blood drives, collecting 14,657 units of blood.

A Note About Volunteers
Our chapter employs only 13 full-time paid staff - just enough to train our volunteer corps and provide financial resources for them to carry out our work.

Volunteers serve as members of the board, instructors teaching lifesaving skills, disaster action team members, office adminstrators, event organizers and more.

This year, 1,229 volunteers made the work of the chapter possible, contributing 248,688 hours. Since volunteers deliver our services, your contributed dollars leverage a high degree of assistance.
