The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross was founded in 1916, and was the first in Virginia to open a headquarters for service delivery. Shortly thereafter, chapters were founded in Botetourt and Craig Counties, and Salem. These chapters were merged with Roanoke at a later date to become the Roanoke Valley Chapter.

Today, the Roanoke Valley Chapter's area of responsibility includes Roanoke, Botetourt, Franklin, Pittsylvania and Craig Counties, and the cities and towns therein. In March, 2005 the Franklin County Chapter merged with the Roanoke Valley Chapter. In July, 2007, the Danville-Pittsylvania County Chapter downsized its operation and now falls under the umbrella of the Roanoke Valley Chapter. While administrative functions are handled by the Roanoke Valley Chapter, the Red Cross office in Danville remains. The total population in this service area is approximately 400,000.

The Chapter shares its quarters in downtown Roanoke with the Appalachian Blood Services Region. The chapterhouse was built in the 1960s and expanded following a $2.7 million community-wide capital campaign in 1991. The Chapter has been a partner agency with the United Way of Roanoke Valley for over 75 years, and in March, 2005, became a partner agency with the United Way of Franklin County.

We provide a wide array of services to the community in the fields of Health, Safety, Disaster, Service to the Armed Forces, and Volunteer opportunities. The chapter has been named as "The Best Organization to Volunteer For" by readers of The Roanoker Magazine. Over 800 volunteers provide the chapter with their time and talents every year.
